July 10th, 2009: Premiere at Die Pumpe in Kiel, Germany
The premiere of Al Jolson and The Jazz Singer took place at the movie theater Die Pumpe in Kiel, Germany.
A short introduction was given by Dr. Eckhard Pabst from Kiel University.
The Old Synagogue at Haßstraße in Kiel
Coincidentally, the movie theater Die Pumpe is located in the same street where the only remains of a synagogue in Kiel can be found.
The synagogue was built in 1869 and was not demolished during the Third Reich because the Jewish Community had already moved to another synagogue in 1910.
July 12, 2009: The Jazz Singer at Die Pumpe in Kiel, Germany
Two days after the screening of the feature documentary Al Jolson and The Jazz Singer, Die Pumpe screened the new digital version of The Jazz Singer (Warner Bros. 2007).
This was the first time that The Jazz Singer was screened in Kiel after its original premiere on May 7th of 1930!
